Coming from 13 countries Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, DRC and Tanzania for six weeks of training in Bamako, DELGEME were honored with a Certificate of Completions in the presence of the Rector of the USTTB, Professor Adama Diaman Keïta, the Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Professor Boubacar Traoré and Professor Ogobara Doumbo Director of Malaria Research And Training Center (MRTC), Pr. Laure Juompan, the NIH representative, and the Director of DELGEME, Professor Abdoulaye Djimde.
Overall presentation of the training
It was in the large conference room of the MRTC that DELGEME organized its first short-term training course to develop the skills of young African scientists in modern techniques contributing to the elimination of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa.
Throughout this six-week course, seven modules have been implemented with the main objective of fighting malaria in sub-Saharan Africa as our slogan states “a malaria-free Africa”.
These modules are:
Module 1: Epidemiology, Lead Facilitator: Dr. Ben Andagalu, DELGEME Training Hub
Module 2: Mentorship, Lead Facilitator: Dr. Deus Ishengoma, DELGEME Mentorship Hub
Module 3: Population Genetics and Introduction to Unix / Linux Programming, Lead Facilitators: Dr. Amed Ouattara and Dr. Antoine Dara (Guest facilitators)
Module 4: Biostatistics / Programming / Bioinformatics, Lead Facilitators: Dr. Lucas Amentega-Etego, Research Management and Environment Hub and Dr. Alfred Ngwa, DELGEME Training Hub.
Module 5: Scientific Writing and Oral Communication, Lead Facilitators: Professor Abdoulaye Djimdé, Director of DELGEME, Doctor Anita Ghansah, Research Management and Environment Hub
Module 6: Molecular Biology, Principal Facilitator: Professor Abdoulaye Djimdé
Module 7: Vaccine Research and Good Clinical Practice, Principal Facilitator: Professor Mahamadou Théra (Guest facilitator).
The organization of the course was carried out by Dr Oumou Maiga Ascofare (Technical Hub of DELGEME) and the general organization by the Administrative Hub of DELGEME under the direction of Professor Djibril Sangaré.
For six weeks, the students were taught through conferences, seminars, practical sessions and also through personal presentations of their project.
The learning outcomes for students
Having received high-level courses by African facilitators who have put themselves at the disposal of the students so that this is a success, the students of DELGEME have returned to their original structure with knowledge that will allow them to evolve with more ease in their academic and scientific journey.
According to the testimony of a Master’s student, Dr. Ehouni N’da Désiré: “During these summer courses, I learned several lessons which will be very useful for my training in Master of Bioinformatics and Molecular Biology, precisely the First module in epidemiology, the second in population genetics, and finally the third in scientific writing.”
We also learned in epidemiology how to guide our study using different types of study design.”
Thus DELGEME was able to bring together the young scientific community from Anglophone, Francophone and Lusophone countries with 43% of female participants. This cosmopolitan mix showed the dynamics of a community involved in the fight against malaria
Participants had the chance to learn about the history of Mali with a field visit to Kangaba as well as the study sites in Kolle and Bancoumana.
