Deputy Head of the Immuno Physiopathology & Infectious Diseases Department at Institut Pasteur de Dakar
Dr. Makhtar Niang is a Research Scientist and the Deputy Head of the Immuno Physiopathology & Infectious Diseases Department at Institut Pasteur de Dakar, Senegal. His field of specialization is molecular parasitology and was successively trained at the University Cheikh Anta Diop, Institut Pasteur de Dakar in Senegal, the University of Montpellier II in France, the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore and at Harvard School of Public Health in USA. His training is multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural (Africa, Asia, America, Europe), and he has received several honors and awards for his academic achievements including a patent. His primary research interest is centered on the development, validation and implementation of highly sensitive and innovative diagnostics to support the control and elimination of malaria. Leveraging on his previous experience, expertise, recognition and successes in the field, he has started new projects on integrated surveillance for the simultaneous detection of multiple pathogens using multiplex serological and molecular approaches. His current roles involve the scientific and administrative management of various research projects from donors such as EDCTP, European Research Council, NIH, BMGF, ROTARY, etc…), overseeing and supervision of a research group of ten people including postdoc, PhD and master II students, and research technicians. He has extensive experience interacting with international collaborators and scientific bodies and serves in technical and advisory management boards at national and international organizations such as WANETAM, PAVON, SOSEPAME. He is an expert consultant for Integrated Quality Laboratory Service (IQLS) organization to lead trainings on malaria diagnostic in West African countries.
