DELGEME’s participation to the First Symposium of the African Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics (ACE-B) in Bamako-Mali
Context
As part of its activities, the African Center for Excellence in Bioinformatics (ACE-B) of the University of Science, Technology, and Technology of Bamako (USTTB) organized its first symposium, titled “Bioinformatics for Global Health”, from March 11 to 12, 2019, in Bamako, Mali.
The symposium aimed to provide students with a platform to present their work in the following areas:
- Biological sequence analysis,
- Biostatistics,
- Data sciences,
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The opening ceremony was presided over by the Rector of USTTB, Professor Adama Diaman Keïta.
DELGEME at the Center of Discussions on Bioinformatics
DELGEME actively participated in the symposium through two key contributions:
- Presentation by Professor Abdoulaye Djimdé, Director of DELGEME.
- Poster presentation by Miss Assetou Diarra and an oral presentation by Dr. Moussa Djimdé.
This two-day event gathered leading researchers in bioinformatics and representatives of partner institutions from various continents. DELGEME, through its director and contributors, reaffirmed its position as a key player in African bioinformatics research. Highlights included the presentation of the DELGEME program, progress updates, and resources established for student data storage in three countries: Mali, Kenya, and The Gambia.
Student Contributions
- Miss Assetou Diarra, a DELGEME PhD student, presented her project on the characterization of bacterial populations observed in water reproduction sites and in the larvae of Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles gambiae in malaria-endemic regions of Mali.
- Dr. Moussa Djimdé, a Master’s graduate in Bioinformatics trained by DELGEME, shared insights from his project describing the genetic characteristics of Plasmodium vivax isolates from northern Mali.
Both presentations were well received by the audience of researchers.
Recognition
Miss Assetou Diarra’s oral presentation was particularly notable, earning her the Best Oral Presentation Award. DELGEME extends its congratulations to Miss Diarra for this achievement.
We look forward to future events that continue to highlight health research in Africa!
