Graduation of Moussa Djimdé and Javan Okendo, DELGEME students at Master level
After 2 years of hard work, Dr. Moussa Djimdé from Mali and Mr. Javan Okendo from Kenya have graduated with distinction at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Graduate Profiles
1. Dr. Moussa Djimdé
Dr. Moussa Djimdé is affiliated with the Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC) at the University of Sciences, Techniques and Technology of Bamako (USTTB), Mali. He earned his Doctorate in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Odontostomatology of the University of Bamako.
His doctoral thesis focused on the in vivo efficacy of three antimalarial drugs—Fansidar, Mefloquine, and Coartem—in treating uncomplicated malaria among children aged 6–59 months in Koro, Mali.
Dr. Djimdé also completed a 12-month training course in biostatistics and data management at the Competence Center in Methodology and Statistics (CCMS) of the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH). This was part of the TDR-WHO Capacity Building Grant programme.
Finally, he pursued a Master’s degree in bioinformatics at the University of Cape Town under the DELGEME fellowship. His master’s thesis focused on the genetic characteristics of Plasmodium vivax in northern Mali.
2. Mr. Javan Okendo
Mr. Javan Okendo is from Kenya and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from Jomo Kenyatta University. He worked as a research assistant at Strathmore University’s Center for Research in Therapeutic Sciences before pursuing further studies.
Under the DELGEME fellowship, Mr. Okendo obtained a Master’s degree in bioinformatics from the University of Cape Town. His thesis project analyzed the evolution of Plasmodium falciparum within a host during treatment. The objective was to investigate the evolution of Plasmodium falciparum and assess the presence of ACT (Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy) drug resistance signatures.
