Folami Balogun Presents His Research Work at the Wellcome Connecting Science Conference
DELGEME Plus PhD fellow Folami Balogun presented part of his doctoral research work at the international conference “Wellcome Connecting Science: Antimicrobial Resistance – Genomes, Big Data and Emerging Technologies.” His presentation, entitled “Carbapenem-Resistant Acinetobacter baumannii from a Tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in Nigeria,” focused on antimicrobial resistance and genomic epidemiology in Nigeria.
Through a structured survey conducted in a hospital in Kwara State, he and his collaborators identified and investigated a possible outbreak event among neonates admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit. The findings revealed the presence of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) lineages. The study also showed that biofilm formation varied across isolates and growth conditions. This work highlights the growing importance of genomic epidemiology in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
Folami Balogun’s participation in this international conference reflects the commitment of DELGEME Plus fellows to high-level scientific research and their contribution to global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance.
